It is understood that the Meynells
acquired lands in this part of Yorkshire after the Norman
Conquest, and in the early part of Henry 1st's reign (1100-1135) Robert de
Meynell gained
Whorlton by marrying Gertrude, daughter of Robert Fossard. First there was
a wooden fort built then in the 12th Century a stone keep was built, The castle
has lots of history and it is believed the marriage contract between Mary
Queen of Scots and Lord Darnley was signed in 1565. The village of Whorlton
itself was destroyed by the Bubonic Plague. The castle had three families
who owned it De Meynells, The Darcy's and then the Strangways.
PRESENT FROM AGH WERE MARK, ANGIE, STEPH, JAZZ, , ALAN, ANDY AND DES WHO IS FORMING HIS OWN GROUP SOON.
We arrived at 9pm except for Andy and Alan who joined us a little later. We started y entering the Castle which was very still and peaceful, we stood around for a little bit, knowing that if something would happen it would not belong before we had to wait. After about 15 minutes we went outside, Angie became aware of someone being present, and a few of us all thought we saw someone walking about ten yards away from us. Although there was no one there we could make out the silhouette of someone. After another few moments Angie tells us there is a farmer present with the initial J. He seems to be wandering about as if he would when alive, we know from research the Castle was once used by a local farmer for his animals. The team were constantly aware of small but very bright coloured lights floating around us and the Castle. Nothing much else happened in the first hour so we made our way inside as the building appeared to be building a feeling as though we had been joined by someone.
22:00hrs. Angie senses a lady with us called Catherine or Katherine, Angie says to her, would you like to talk to us, she turns to us and says this lady is not very agreeable. She is mumbling something and thrashing her arms around in anger. Angie then asks her am I welcome here, as she says that she is aware someone is walking on the floor above, although it has gone. She continues asking the lady to communicate with us. After a few moments Angie says, it is like she is saying not a chance, but in those exact words. Angie then says Catherine De Mor' doesn't get the rest, (So far I have found Catherine Mauley and Katherine De Mauley, not sure if one of these is the lady in question). As Angie continues to call out Mark says he thinks he saw some movement just behind her, where there is a doorway to a small room. Jazz tries to photograph the area to see if we get anything, when Angie says the lady has moved behind her. Angie says her dress is a green one similar to the colour sage. As she tells us this Steph heard someone making a huffing sound just to the side of us, and says it was a woman. Jazz says he felt a brushing passed his him. Des comments how the atmosphere has changed since our arrival. Just then at 22:10hrs we are joined by both Andy and Alan. Angie continues by saying Catherine is calling out a name, sounds like Rachel ! possibly her daughter who passed at a young age, she says the lady appears a little insane, out of her mind, screeching something that is not understandable, Angie says she is being vile now, cussing something and spitting at her. Alan comments how heavy the atmosphere feels in the area. He also says he has the initial J. Suddenly we are disturbed when Mark's attention is drawn to the other corner of the room by some movement, as he turns to look Angie says she saw what appeared to be a clergyman. Mark, Jazz and Des go to check, as they enter the room in the corner they all say it is almost as if someone is already in there, Des immediately checks the room next to it, commenting he does not feel alone in there. We wait for several minutes before the feeling passes. As we leave the room we are told by the others that Angie and Andy had both saw a female figure on the next floor, in a doorway, Steph had heard the huffing again, but this time it was more prolonged.
22:30hrs. Jazz goes to where Angie is stood and says he can the presence the too, mark goes over and as they stand there a strange smell goes passed them, but it is not something we know. Mark calls out to Catherine but hears nothing, although Angie and Steph hear a woman's sigh. Jazz says he feels as though someone has just spat at him. Andy becomes aware of a lady watching us from the upper floor again, she looked at us then moved away. Des hears a metal chinking sound near the gate as Jazz calls out to Catherine, Des and Andy keep an eye towards the gate listening for the sound again. We hear a noise coming from the small room where Catherine is, so Mark enters the room, Angie calls to Mark not to go in as she feels Catherine is threatened by this action. Mark says it really does feel like someone is in there with him, and as he goes further in, he feels the camcorder knocked out of his hand, luckily he catches it just before it hits the ground. (This was something I did not expect, in fourteen years of investigating I have never had this happen before, I did not drop it, I felt the force of anothers hand drag it away. Statement from Mark). Mark calls out to Catherine asking her to be nice, and saying to her we mean no harm. He comments it feels very tense in there, as Andy says he heard a females voice mumbling. Alan comments how the room goes from dark to light constantly, as if someone is moving around in there, this is of course after Mark has left the room. Angie goes back to where the doorway is and sits down in her chair, both Mark and Andy see an outline of a figure walk behind her. Angie comments Catherine is spitting at us again showing she does not wish to speak to us. Angie asks was the physician called, just then four of the team all heard the sound of floorboards creaking above us, although as said earlier there is no longer any floor there. Jazz asks was the clergyman we saw earlier there because of her. He feels he was called by the family after she lost the child, and she was angry that God took the child away from her, he was sensing she cursed and this angered the clergyman, resulting in a big standoff between the two. Everyone was feeling as though they had headache and some complained of tightness in the chest, Alan said his heartbeat was racing. Des did not feel her presence and so moved to the doorway to go in, as he did he too became very aware of the feeling someone was in there, and did not wish to be disturbed. Steph is aware of a figure to the side of us, and comments she wants to cry and scream out loud. Suddenly the atmosphere changed completely, it was if she left the area and as this happened even the strong winds around the Castle ceased resulting in a complete silence, that was a little eerie.
23:00hrs. The silence was broken by the sound of metal again, it could only be described as the sound of the metal handle on the gate being banged, but they were both perfectly still. Angie heard what appeared to be a wooden flute being played, as she says this Mark sees a figure through the gate to the rear running by, he shot out to check who it was, but there was no sight if anyone. Jazz finishes telling Mark he feels Catherine's loss was what helped tip her over the edge so to speak. Alan comments didn't we hear a small child cry hear once and a babies cry, which we had on a previous visit. At 23:30hrs. Nothing else happened, we decided to end the night and visit a second location, Mark had been approached by someone on arrival tonight, who told him about an experience at another location nearby. So we got back in the vehicles and headed off there.
FINAL THOUGHT: great place for an invest as always, never expected the experience I had here tonight very interesting indeed. Never experienced anything like this before in the 14 years I have been investigating.
