HISTORY:
THE VILLAGE OF BURNISTON WAS FIRST MENTIONED IN THE DOMESDAY BOOK OF 1086
AS BRINNISTUN, OTHER RECORDS SHOW IT HAS ALSO BEEN KNOWN AS BRINGSTUN AND
BRINNINGSTON THE NAME DERIVES FROM BRYNING THE NAME OF A FARMER WHO OWNED
THE LANDS AND TUN MEANING FARM OR SETTLEMENT.
AT THE END OF THE VILLAGE LIES THE THREE JOLLY SAILORS ONCE KNOWN AS THE SHIP
INN, AND LATER AS JOLLY SAILORS INN.
THE RESTAURANT IS BELIEVED TO BE AN OLD CHAPEL AND IN FACT RECORDS SHOW A
CHAPEL WAS IN THE GARTH BELOW THE GARDEN OF THE SHIP INN.
THERE ARE REPORTS OF A PREACHER, AND A SAILOR AMONG OTHERS.
INVESTIGATION: Present from AGH were Angie, Mark, Tracey, Andy and Mike also present from Three Jolly Sailors were Dave and Michelle the Landlords and staff Sally, Angela and Matt.
MIDNIGHT: We arrived at the location and unloaded all the equipment.
00:15hrs.
Whilst we stood in the Main Bar, Angie started to talk and explained that
she was already sensing a lady upstairs she called Josie who had curly hair
and was dressed in a white dress. Angie explains that Josie is grounded and
her reason for being here still is she is waiting for someone to return. She
is very anxious and she took her own life by hanging herself on the stairs.
Someone went away and didn't return for reasons unknown to Josie. Angie says
Josie stands by the window and watches from there often.
She then moves on to explain she feels there is a connection with smugglers
and she feels there are two tunnels linked here. The owners tell us they have
been told that there is a tunnel in the place somewhere and that a regular
claims to have seen a map once that shows the pub and the tunnel. We have
looked into this but have been unable to find any maps confirming the story.
Angie also tells us there are two spirits connected with the restaurant, one
is a man of the cloth and has been seen but very rarely, however there is
another man present who appears much more often and because of his style of
clothing he is mistaken for a man of the cloth, he is called Bill. He is Grounded
and does not want to move on. (One
of the stories connected to the place is that of a preacher who appears in
the restaurant).
Angie tells us the man of the cloth is connected to a chapel that once
stood where the restaurant is, Angie says there are two chairs close to each
other one is were the Preacher sits the other is were Bill sits and is another
reason for the two being confused as one spirit.
As Angie finished Michelle asks Angie if she will go with her to the fireplace
and sit on a log to see if she feels anything, as Angie approaches the fireplace
she says the log is on the wrong side of the fireplace and that it should
be on the other side, (we were then told that
the owners had recently moved it to the other side) Angie
says it should be put back as it will upset a man called George who l;likes
to sit on the log near to the fire. (There is a story
of a man who has been sitting on the log and that it should never be moved
due to some curse being attached to the log). George comes in Visitation
and he is not Grounded, nor did he die here.
Just to the side of the fireplace there is a door with a porthole type window
in it which Angie feels is not in its original position, we were then told
that this is true, Angie says she wants to come back to this later as she
feels there is something else about this door!.
01:00hrs.
Angie then went through the door with Michelle, Dave and Andy who was on camera
as they went upstairs. Mark
and the others started by setting up a number of camcorders on tripods, motion
sensor lights, motions sensor alarms and voice recording equipment downstairs.
Upstairs Angie enters one
of the bedrooms and senses another female to Josie however this one is residual
she looks about 35 to 40 years in age, and is more in the very large walk
in closet / wardrobe, Angie feels this room was once used as some kind of
punishment room, she says she looks much older than she is.
(Michelle then tells us that she has always felt uneasy
in the room and more so in the closet room as she felt it was not a nice room
but couldn't put her finger on why). Angie explains to Michelle
what she means by residual.
They then went into another room, this is the room Angie had sensed Josie
was in and they go to the window Angie had sensed Josie watching from. Angie
explains to Michelle about what Josie had done and were she done it. They
stayed in the room for a bit but Angie wanted to come back here later as Josie
wasn't present just now. They left the room and Angie explained she did not
feel anything Malevolent on the premises but what had she felt that there
are a few energies here, some of which are residual, The lady in the closet
and The preacher whilst George came in visitation and Bill and Josie were
both Grounded. There are other energies we may find as the night goes on.
01:30hrs. Angie spent a little private time talking to the owners regarding some personal information which will be kept private.
02:00hrs. We went to the restaurant area with Sally a member of staff, Angie points to the corner she feels Bill sits in. (Sally tells us she hates this part of the pub and has had a few experiences here, and feels someone does watch from that corner). Angie points to a high back chair and asks was that chair or one like it in the corner originally. (Sally tells us it what a rocking chair with a high back that once sat in the corner but it was moved as members of staff had felt uneasy about it). Sally then left the room as she was feeling uneasy here. And we decided on a short break.
02:15hrs. We stopped for a small break. And just after this Sally, Angela and Matt left.
02:30hrs.
Mark, Tracey, Andy and Mike, went to the end of the restaurant nearest another
bar. Tracey sensed a man sat near the window Andy and Mike were both feeling
something odd about the corner and took several photos. As we turned to walk
away Angie joined us with Michelle and Dave and immediately looked into the
corner and said a male was there, He is called Donald and was a regular here,
he died of a stroke, he used guns for something and then feels Gaming with
this man. He used to come in here on a Saturday after he had been out for
a shoot, but he never comes here on a Sunday. (Dave
who himself goes gaming, explains to us, that this makes sense as it is illegal
to shoot game on a Sunday). Angie continues to tell us that Donald
would come here on his own for a peaceful drink and he lived very close by
in one of the cottages.
Angie starts to talk to Michelle who like Sally hates the restaurant and feels
very nervous in one particular spot, she says it is as if someone is stood
directly behind her, and she avoids this spot as best she can and walks the
long way around rather than go through here. Angie feels it is Bill who does
this as he likes to be imposing and likes to put sensations on people. We
asked Michelle to go to the spot to see if she felt the same when we were
present. As we go to the area Michelle starts to feel anxious again and feels
an icy cold sensation around her legs. The spot is directly in the path towards
Bills corner. As we stood for a little time Angie heard a voice say "giveth
me thy throne" Which she heard several times and that he is
also Tactile, as she says that Tracey says she could feel someone touch her
hand. Angie explains again that the preacher sits in another chair just yards
away from Bill's and that people mistake them, that when they see Bill they
mistake him for the preacher due to his clothing and the story of the preacher.
He is the one though they really see and when people walk through here he
likes his presence to be felt. Angie explains to us that he is seen in Black
and White by people and that also makes for the mistaken identity. Although
Angie feels the restaurant was definitely a chapel at one time.
(Records and maps of the area do show a Chapel was directly were the restaurant
is. And on record it states that the Chapel was on the Garth below the garden
of the Ship Inn. The Three Jolly Sailors was named the Ship Inn).
Mark asks why is he here and why does he feel so important, Angie explains
he was a very dodgy character, he was a smuggler and thought he was top dog
and very important. He dealt in Tobacco and silks, he had made a lot of money
through his dealings. But he is more upset by the moving of the chair and
wants it back where it was. It is not the original chair but resembles the
type he sat on. Angie does not feel he died here but loved the place and this
is where he made lots of money. (Dave tells us that
there is a direct line from here to the beach and that there is a rocky cove
on Burniston rocks, ideal to sneak things in out of sight of the preventives
(customs men)).
Mark placed a chair in Bills spot and sat there for ten minutes to see if
he could feel anything, Angie and Mike then heard some loud tapping like you
would if you rap your fingers on a table whilst waiting for someone. Meanwhile
Mark was sat in the chair and Tracey was stood next to him with the EMF meter.
Tracey felt a rush of wind pass her towards Mark, and Mark said it was if
he could feel two hands press into his back as if he was being pushed out
of the chair, and cannot explain these feelings. After a about five minutes
the sensations went away.
03:15hrs. We went back to the Main Bar area as Michelle had heard a noise as if someone was in there. We went to check it out but could find nothing and stopped for a break. At 03:31hrs whilst everything was quiet we did hear a woman's voice followed by a "Hmm" and believe we have caught it on tape. CLICK HERE TO LISTEN.
03:33hrs. We stayed in the Main bar area and Angie, Michelle and Dave all felt a cold breeze pass their legs. Angie then feels that someone is watching us through the porthole in the door and believes she saw a shadowy figure pass by it. Tracey and Andy saw it too. (Dave tells us this the experience he had, he had looked at the door one night and saw a small figure standing looking through the porthole at him, he described it as being dressed all in white and wearing a very wide rimmed white hat). Mark went through the door to have a look and on close inspection you can make out the floor on the other side has been raised about a foot high, so if someone had been stood there this would account for them appearing to be small. As we discussed this we all heard loud footstep coming from above us, the room above was the room Josie would go in. So we decided to go upstairs to have a look.
03:42hrs.
We went upstairs back to Josie's room. As we entered Mike started to feel
very uneasy. Tracey sensed a female who was sad and told us she got the impression
this Lady had lost someone. Dave took up position near the door whilst Michelle
sat on the bed, the team all made their way into the centre of the room. Angie
can feel a breeze next to her and Andy who is stood to her left feels the
breeze behind him, Tracey who is stood facing them feels red hot.
Just then we heard three very loud knocks on the wall to the room next door
and Dave went in to check the room, coming back to confirm the room was empty.
We all started to feel uneasy on our legs as if we had feelings of vertigo.
(Whilst this is a common thing to happen during an Investigation
I feel it was more to do with the very unlevel floor we were stood on).
Angie tells us Josie was not married but did have a lover and gets the name
Robert for him, she feels he had done something wrong whilst away and had
been caught by the law and punished for his crime, this was unknown to Josie,
who repeated herself by going to the window looking for her man awaiting his
return, as time had gone by she simply thought he had left for good and being
broken hearted she hung herself.
Angie then started to call out for Josie several times trying to get her to
talk to us, during this everyone present had heard a female voice several
times. Angie also tried to convince to move on and that if she did, she may
meet with Robert again, but sadly she would not listen and was determined
to remain until Robert returns. Dave left the room again when we heard someone
whistling but could not find where it had come from. After a short period
things went very quiet and we decided to move on.
04:05hrs. We went into the other room with the walk in closet. Tracey went straight to the closet as did Mark they stood in there for a little bit when Tracey said she felt someone had been locked in a room here for doing something. Andy and Mike went in after they came out, and Mike said all the hairs on the back of his neck stood up as if someone was with them. Andy as he left the closet and came back into the room thought he heard some knocking again and Angie who was looking down the corridor said she saw a figure pass by into one of the other rooms. We went to check but saw nothing. Then Tracey and Michelle both heard a tapping sound come from the corner. We heard a few more tapping sounds and then Michelle noticed some beads hanging on the closet door moving in a strange way, on first examination it looked as though they were being pulled out and upwards in a strange fashion, we checked for a breeze but could not feel one, so Mark went into the closet and pulled the door closed behind him. Whilst he sat in the room he could feel a natural breeze working its way around the door and this may be what caused it. However Mark noticed a females distorted face in the closet near some clothes that were on a rail and on opening the door a hanger in the same place was swaying side to side, but all the other hangers on the rail were perfectly still.
04:50hrs. Nothing else had happened and we decided to call it a night, wrapped up the equipment and left for 5:30hrs.
FINAL THOUGHT: The place was very interesting as was the voice, the knocking sounds and also the sensations in Bills corner, we do hope to go back to conduct a further vigil one day.
