The Plough Inn, in Scalby Village near Scarborugh was built in 1899 but was previously in the building next door, and was then known as The Plough Hotel. Scalby is mentioned in the Domesday book In 1086, when it formed part of the Kings manor of Falsgrave, it was a hunting ground up until 1267. It is reported that Scalby was also a mining village.

THE INVESTIGATION

Present of A.G.H Angie, Mark (to be known as Mark 1), and Wayne, and present from the pub were Landlord Mark (to be known as Mark 2), landlady Tracy their son Daniel, also Tracy’s mum Janet.

23:30 we waited in the bar area until all the customers left the building; we then brought in the equipment.

00.00 We started to get the equipment ready, testing everything was in working order and then discussed what equipment we would use and explained about the trigger objects.

00.30 Set up digital voice recorder and placed on the snooker table, Cam 1 was placed at one end of the snooker table facing the entrance to that room, a wooden toy Train was placed on a piece of paper and drawn around in view of Cam 1, Beam Barriers were put in place so if anyone entered an alarm would go off.

00.50 Wayne sensed the presence of a man called Jack who looked in his 70’s wore a flat cap and white scarf, he used to walk his dog from Scalby to Hackness, he drank in this pub at one time, and one day when walking his dog Bess he lost her.

00.59 We entered the kitchen with Cam 2 after hearing a banging sound, whilst in there nothing was heard but Cam 2 has recorded a banging sound.

00.15 Mark 1 Wayne and Daniel entered the cellar area to look around whilst Mark 2, Tracy, Janet and Angie stayed in the bar area, during this the people in the bar area heard someone whistling which Mark 1 heard whilst in the cellar neither Wayne nor Daniel heard it.

00.24.20 We went back to the kitchen after another noise was heard, Angie and Tracy both felt a cold spot between them, the floor in the kitchen makes a distinguishing noise when you walk on it, Mark 1 had an eavesdropper listening device in, and could hear that noise when someone walks in there, looking around and checking everyone's position all were stood still!

00.35 we stopped for a short break.

00.47.54 Angie senses a man called Charles Foster or Foyster in the bar area who passed her with his dog, she felt this was Residual, at the time we got static interference on the equipment and felt a cold breeze pass by, also everyone in the room heard a coughing sound. Then a few minutes later we all heard voices but they were from outside.

00.54.10 The sound of a dog’s metal collar was heard in the dining room we investigated but nothing could be found.

00.56 Mark 2 went upstairs to the living quarters, Once again we entered the kitchen area as lots of unusual sounds were coming from in there, everytime we recorded in there we got lots of static interference but we feel this is due to all the appliances in there. Angie sensed a man in there named Ged who was a Miller in the area around 1814, (she felt he visited a building that stood here prior to the one now) Ged was angry that someone had killed his horse due to him having bad debt problems, he gave the name of his wife as Mary and a son called Jacob, a few tapping sounds were heard by all and some could smell fresh bread, then we heard footsteps coming from the dining room towards the kitchen which we all thought was Mark 2 coming in, but no one was there. Mark 1 heard a small child's voice calling and thought it may be one of Tracys children, so she went to check on this but they were all fast asleep two floors up, we felt its possible one of them called out in their sleep or it may have been on the TV in the room directly above, so no more was thought of this.

01.16 we went into the dining room, Tracy, Daniel and Wayne all thought they could hear a small Child’s voice again, we were unable to find the source yet again. Whilst discussing what the possibilities may have been we all heard a girls voice call out “mum” and it felt like the source was in the same room as us.

01.29 we were stood in the area between the Bar and the Dining room when the E.M.F started to register at 3 it then went down slowly to 0. The temp remained at 25.0celcius the whole time.

01.39 we decided to stop for a break and go over what had happened so far.

01.57.20 Mark 1 went to check on Cam 1, and noticed the digital voice recorder was showing the symbol for flat battery, the batteries were changed but the symbol shown again, we checked the batteries on a voltmeter which shown no reason for this, and the voice recorder has been rechecked with the same batteries and all was working well.

02.00 We felt a strange energy field in the doorway between the Kitchen and the Dining room, we all took turns at standing in this area, totally relaxing our body weight to discover that our left arms would raise slowly as if being pulled up. This is not paranormal as these things can take place from time to time in certain areas, but they are interesting to watch all the same.

02.20.20 a very heavy sigh was heard three times again from the kitchen area, so we entered there once again, whilst in there the E.M.F went to a 1 raising slowly to 4 and a half before going down again, the battery was checked but it was fine.

02.40 we decided to stop for a break whilst we checked over the equipment to make sure it was fine, everything was.

03.15 we decided to try a seance in the dining area, Angie sensed the spirit of John William was with us once again, as in our first investigation, we tried a table tipping experiment but nothing happened. He did however continue to communicate with Angie discussing how proud he was here and about the old hag (his wife) who gave him a hard time complaining and moaning a lot, he said she treated him pretty bad aswell.

03.25.16 Elena or Elanor was present but she failed to communicate with anyone

03.30.14 Daniel felt as though his little finger was pulled twice and this was witnessed by Janet.

03.33.08 a spirit did come forward to communicate but as it was a relative we will not place the information here.

04.07.15 Elena / Elanor came through again, we used the glass on the table this time, and it moved slightly, She also visited a building that stood here before the one here now, she was from the early 1800’s and she suffered from an illness but she didn’t know which one, she did however have blisters on her face, she also said she was buried in there church close by and was sad she had no marker on it.

After that we got another relative through and then the night came to a close.

FINAL THOUGHT: The Plough is a most interesting place to have investigated, again we would like to thank the owners and their family for their hospitality..
