EASBY ABBEY, nr RICHMOND.

HOMEPAGE --- INVESTIGATIONS

The Abbey of St. Agatha in Easby was founded in 1152 by Roald (Roaldus), who was the Constable of Richmond Castle. Easby Abbey is a house of the Premonstratensian order. They were canons rather than monks wearing white robes hence they were known as "the white monks". They undertook preaching and pastoral work in the region (such as distributing meat and drink) but followed a code of austerity similar to that of Cistercian monks.

Present from AGH were, Mark, Angie, Steph, Jazz and Tracey. For photos of location please see our Facebook page.

8:15pm We arrived at the location and entered the grounds having a really good look around, the team were surprised at the size of the place. I had been the week before alone to have a look around and see if the location was okay for an investigation. Whilst there I found the place so peaceful, I did not experience anything other than at one point I did think I heard someone behind him in a particular spot and as I turned caught a glimpse of what appeared to be someone in Black in a doorway, it was put of the corner of my eye and lasted a second or two, so I discounted it and never told the others just in case someone saw it on the night. All I told them was that I did find it very peaceful and never mentioned the possible figure. We made our way down to a lower part of the Abbey and found one room still in tact with roof on it, as Jazz went to enter he felt as though he was not allowed to go in. Angie went in and stated 'she was not alone', Tracey said she could see other people around her, and it was not us. We all entered to have a look around, Angie, Tracey and Jazz were all aware we were not the only people in there, but for myself and Steph we felt nothing at this point. As we looked around the room Tracey thought she saw someone pass by the doorway were we had come in, on investigation there was not a soul around to be seen. We waited in here a little longer and the team said they got the sense of food being kept in here which would seem the most logical. It could have been a Cell but would appear to large for this. We went to the room next door and as we entered we all heard a loud thud, but could not find what the cause was. Angie suddenly started talking about more steps that lead even lower, she felt there should be some around here somewhere, not necessarily this room, but very nearby. (According to legend there was a tunnel that led from the Abbey to Richmond Castle, just over a mile away, this was put in place for protection against invading Scots at the time). We made our way back up to the higher levels as Angie said "who is Roald, he is important to this place" she continued by telling us he had something to do with the creation of it. (Roald (Roaldus), who was the Constable of Richmond Castle founded Easby Abbey in 1152).

We made our way further into the grounds leading to the most Northern Part of the Abbey, Angie and Steph both turned and thought they caught a glimpse of something near a doorway, Angie said it was a black figure, (As mentioned at the start of the report, I had been a week earlier alone and thought I saw something like this, I never informed any member of the team about it, yet they both witnessed it in the exact same doorway as I had). Angie continued by saying "that's not right, why as he appeared as a black figure, something's not right about that". (I decided not to say anything yet as I wanted to see if anymore came of it, but as explained at the top of the page, these Monks wore white habits, yet every sighting I have heard about, which there have been more than a dozen to my knowledge including my own the week before, all see a black figure). We continued to make our way around the Abbey crossing over what seemed to be a field along a footpath, Angie claimed she felt we were indoors walking along a corridor, (the footpath was once a long corridor located inside the Abbey). As we continued and got to the far part of the Abbey into some smaller rooms, Angie was still talking about how these monks never wore black or brown robes, but the figure was one of the monks here, his image has not fully formed and that is why he appears as a black image to people. As we walked around the little rooms everyone except myself we had entered somewhere that was private and we were not welcome in this part, I felt totally relaxed here though. Angie says "these monks were different than others and they were very kind, doing good things". (Again as stated above these 'white monks' went around the villages giving out food and water to those who were poor). Angie told me that were not going to get any communication from anyone tonight, and although we all felt we could spend the whole night at the place, that it had become way too dark to continue, this location was the type that your imagination would play tricks on your mind in the dark, causing you to think you were seeing things all the time, so at 10pm we called it a night. We made our way back to the car park and once in the car everyone again except myself saw a figure walk right around the car, I got out to have a look and there was no one about at all. We then set off and went into Richmond itself to have a look around the outskirts of the castle, as there is a walk that covers the outside of the curtain wall, before we set off for home.

FINAL THOUGHT: Very interesting location, not much happened but this place is worth a visit from a none paranormal perspective too, just for its wonderful history and size.
